How to Care for and Display Fine Art at Home

Fine art lasts best when display decisions account for the specific material, construction, and environment of each work. There is no single rule that safely covers painting, photography, paper, sculpture, glass, resin, textile, or mixed media.

Avoid strong direct sunlight, uncontrolled humidity, heat sources, air vents, moisture, smoke, and unstable hanging systems. Use appropriate framing and glazing for works on paper and photography, and qualified installers for large, heavy, or unusually shaped pieces. Outdoor placement should be approved for the exact material and finish.

Clean cautiously. Do not use household sprays, water, solvents, or abrasive cloths on artwork unless a qualified professional has provided instructions. Dust sculpture only with the method recommended for its surface. If damage or change appears, document it and consult a conservator before attempting repair.

Maintain an inventory with photographs, artist, title, date, medium, dimensions, location, condition, provenance, invoice, certificates, insurance information, and installation details. Review condition periodically, especially after moves, storms, construction, or long absences.
