A small object built around close observation

Cartier Gold combines a jewelry box with gold leaf, natural butterflies, glass, and mirror. The association with jewelry makes the container part of the subject: an object made to protect and present something precious becomes the setting for another kind of collected object.

The glass and mirrored display create several layers to look through and around. A direct view can differ from an angled view as reflections overlap the butterflies and gold surfaces. This is a work to examine at close range, with attention to the relationship between the physical elements and their reflected images.

Display and acquisition details

The listed dimensions are seven by six by one inches. Before selecting a shelf, cabinet, or pedestal, confirm the measurements of the complete display assembly and the clearance required around it. The object’s compact scale calls for a viewing position where small details can be seen comfortably.

Ask for condition photographs of the butterflies, glass, mirrored surfaces, gold leaf, and engraved signature plate, together with the available documentation. Handling and display instructions should be specific to this mixed-material work; a finish or cleaning method suitable for glass may not be suitable for the other components.
